11/25 VirtualDub 1.4.12 contains a partially SSE2 optimized MPEG-1 decoder and fixes playback problems on SMP / HyperThreading capable machines. The MPEG4IP Tools 0.9.7 's mp4creator has some improved warning messages, lame has been removed from the package, there's a new tool to dump tracks of an mp4 file called mp4trackdump, the player can now display error messages when playback fails, XviD checks for SSE2 instructions, there's a new TV tuner frequency list and last but not least the player can decode H.261 encoded files now.
11/24 ImgTools 0.99.3 no longer contains muxing/demuxing functions (they were removed due to copyright issues), the DVD ISO tree has been improved to support the JACKET_P directory and to allow other files and directory in the DVD root. The tool also displays the total and remaining time, there are warnings if some files are missing, the minimize button is active and the warnings related to missing files should be correct. eXtreme Movie Manager 1.1b2 allows you to delete all actors in the database, sort actors by name, there's an additional field to indicate if a movie is in color or black&white, the HTML export got a new interface and there are a couple of bugfixes.
11/23 ZoomPlayer 3.0 beta1 is out. AviSynth 2.07 contains a couple of script extensions, has subtitle alignment and spacing options, there's a couple of bugfixes and a couple of new functions. It's mainly a service release for 2.06 users and doesn't contain any functionality from the 2.50 alphas. More info about this release can be found in the AviSynth forum.
11/22 VobSub 2.20 has a totally rewritten indexing engine which is now fully based on PGCs. VOB/Cell ID selection will work even with preprocessed VOBs, closed captions can be output to srt and the YUV2 problems in the AviSynth plugin have been fixed.
11/21 Apparently Cinemacraft is trying to beat the TMPG crew to the "most releases in a month" title as they have released yet another CCE version: v2.66.01.07 properly sets the last used template when you start up the application again and you can work with more than one input file without crashing. Lame 3.93 has also been released, however, the use of the alt-profile options is currently not suggested so I'd wait for v3.94 before upgrading. More info on the issue can be found here.
11/20 ImgTool 0.99.2 automatically creates an AUDIO_TS folder and a VIDEO_TS folder if needed, image generation now also works if the files are not in a VIDEO_TS folder and files are placed in the proper order even if realloc is disabled.
11/19 DVDDecrypter 3.1.4.0 contains improved DVD+R/W and DVD-RAM support, has improved error reporting, device & disc information in ISO mode, better media detection and IFO/BUP region patching code. Then there's a lot more options in the disc burning area, the format of the CCE chapter information file has been changed along with the Maestro chapter file and last but not least the program can display the Manufacturer ID in ISO mode so you can help us extend the list of manufacturer IDs. ImgTool 0.99.1 allows you to select the write speed and the high compatibility mode is now working.
11/18 IfoUpdate 0.57 can write a chapter file for the DVD authoring function in IfoEdit and unlike the VobEdit created file this one will actually match the chapter structure of the disc. Then there's an option to pre-correcting chapter offsets using the DVD authoring option in IfoEdit, the Correct VTS Sectors option has been adjusted to handle discs without VTS_XX_0.VOB files and last but not least the application got its own logo.
11/16 Some of you might have already read it in the forum and indeed, it's true. Derrow has joined 321studios to work on their KISS DVD-9 -> 2x DVD-5 software called DVDXCopy. Apparently there are quite a lot of problems to be solved yet and the product isn't working as some people would like you to believe. And so far the engagement is only temporary. As announced earlier Derrow just recently started working on his own DVDSplit application which is for sale for $25 (that's 1/4 of what DVDXCopy costs). Now that he's working on DVDXCopy DVDSplit's future is uncertain so even if I wanted to I cannot suggest you buy this software instead (which at least in my test works) if you're in the market for that kind of software but I'll keep you updated on the situation as it evolves. Regarding IfoEdit and VobEdit Derrow has repeatedly stated that development would go on once work on DVDXCopy is completed and that these two applications would remain freely available (and in the case of IfoEdit DVDBurning should also be integrated). Anyway, there has been a lot of confusion on the subject recently so I thought I'd give you a status update on the situation.
11/15

ImgTool 0.99 supports DVD burning when Nero 5.5.8 or later is installed. TMPG 2.59 supports Intel's hyperthreading technology, contains some improved templates, there's a high quality sampling wavelength transform engine, the MPEG tools can demux LPCM from MPEG-2 files and there are a couple of bugfixes. CCE 2.66.06 displays the template window even on WinNT and the inverse 3:2 pulldown bug in VBR mode has been fixed (finally...).

TDK has announced 2 new DVD burners: The AID+040212 writes DVD+R at 4x speed, DVD+RW at 2.4x speed, DVD-R/W at 2x and reads DVDs at 12x. CD-Rs can be written at 16x and RWs at 10x. The AID+4 is a single format writer, burning only DVD+R/W at the same speed as its big brother (but of course it also supports CD-R/W at the same speeds). Interestingly enough the dual format burner writes high speed DVD-RWs but not DVD-Rs but since that data comes from the press release it's hopefully accurate. The AID+4 will be out by December, the dual format version by January 03.

11/14 dicas is offering their MPEG-4 encoder mpegable X4 live for download free if charge if you fill out a small questionnaire. DVDSplit 0.5 supports extra features and works even with multiangle and seamless branching movies.
11/13 Mode2CDMaker 1.5a supports nested subdirectories, unlimited number of files per directory and has a single track mode to make better use of small Form2 files. DVD2SVCD 1.1.0b1a fixes a couple of bugs.
11/11 Derrow has created 2 new tools. The first one is called DVDSplit and it's stripped down version of IfoEdit designed to make easy DVD-9 backups by splitting them over 2 DVD±Rs for people who cannot or don't want to go through the procedure using IfoEdit (which is slightly more complicated). The 2nd one is called DVDBurn and can be used to write DVDs. It uses the Nero burning API so you have to have a recent working version of Nero installed. Eventually the functionality of this tool will be integrated into DVDSplit and IfoEdit. Unlike previous tools (which afaik will remain free) these two programs aren't available for free, rather you have to pay 25$ to get them both and all future upgrades of those applications.
11/9

If you ever wondered why people start copying CDs instead of buying them, wonder no more. EMI Germany tells its paying customers the truth about copy protection and piracy. Makes you think twice before you buy the next EMI disc, doesn't it?

11/8 ZoomPlayer 2.90 is out. DVD2SVCD 1.1.0 b1 features frame accurate encoding, AviSynth script control, there's an interesting new multipass encoding method, the filesize prediction algorithm has been improved, VCD chapters are now supported and there are a lot of bugfixes and minor improvements.
11/7

Finally: IfoEdit 0.95 is out. It fixes the menu option bugs introduced in v0.94 and more importantly it now supports subtitles and chapters in the DVD authoring mode, plus there's a useful log in the DVD authoring section that can help you determine eventual errors. You'll see a deactivated add Title button so you already know what to expect in the next version... full CCE (and any other MPEG-2 encoder for that matter) remux is getting closer and closer. And still on the subject of IfoEdit Derrow is looking for people who could help him add a DVD burning function to IfoEdit. In order to fully use the added functionality of the new IfoEdit you'll also need VobEdit 0.6 which can now be used to demux substreams from a set of VOB files and to display the audio delay of audio streams contained in a VOB file. DivXManager has been renamed to eXtreme Movie Manager. v1.1 features thumbnail view, support for IFO files, tabbed txt export, has some new scriptengine options and a couple of bugfixes.

Of course the DVD authoring in IfoEdit guide has once again been updated to correspond to the release version of IfoEdit and VobEdit.

On a DVD-R related subject, due to the incompatibilities between the Sony DRU-500A DVD burner and Verbatim DVD-R discs Verbatim has to get rid of all the discs which exhibit said problem so you can currently find really good deals on Verbatim DVD-R and DVD+R discs and unless you have the mentioned burner or plan to get one (or the upcoming NEC dual format writer which supposedly has the same problem) these discs will just work fine (burned on the A04 and tested on two standalones, one of which is really picky about discs and even objects to most major brand blanks) so if you want to get some quality media for a good price now is the time. Eventually the incompatible discs will be replaced by new ones and prices should go up again.

11/6 ReStream 0.8.6 fixes a couple of bugs and comes with a more comprehensive manual.
11/5 ChapterXtractor 0.962 has extended commandline support and can be used with BeSplit to split AC3 files at every chapter. ZoomPlayer 2.90 RC2 has also been released.
11/4

IfoUpdate 0.56 can make your IFO files region free now, contains a fix for the frame rate mismatch error when importing chapter files on some NTSC material and the runtime error 52 has been fixed.

On the guide side we have SeYtoN's Button Over Video guide which teaches you how to re-author The Matrix in Scenarist.

11/3

SubRip 1.11 can split text based subtitles according to existing splitted AVI files, can check if a new version is available, contains improved OCR correction and a few minor bugfixes.

I've also added info on how to set the language attribute for audio and subtitle streams in the DVD authoring in IfoEdit guide.

11/2 After a long while I've finally gotten around to write another guide: DVD Authoring in IfoEdit explains you how to use the new feature of the 0.94 release. Actually, the guide is based on the upcoming 0.95 release which will support chapters and subtitles and fix some of the bugs introduced in the 0.94 release.
11/1 VirtualDub 1.4.11 can read and write .tga sequences, has a simple logo filter and a HSV filter, the save image sequence command is now batchable and scriptable and there is a number of bugfixes.
