10/30 RadLight Player build 4126 fixes some small bugs and contains 5 more language files. There's a new release of the BeSweet GUI and if you're interested in DSPGuru's tools (BeSweet, Oggmachine, etc.) you can have a look at his beta page where you can always find the latest beta releases. Last but not least there's yet another new FlaskMpeg release.
10/29 ZoomPlayer 2.90 RC1 is out. CCE SP 2.66.04 is a bugfix version. Unfortunately the bugs related to 3:2 pulldown and multipass encoding still remains. As usual this is a demo release which has a logo in every file you encode. FlaskMpeg 0.7.6 RC2 has also been released and for some reason the website looks horribly screwed up here so I can't locate the changelog :/
10/27 ZoomPlayer 2.90 beta2 is out. As usual the changelog can compete with one month worth of news...
10/26 OggMux 0.9.4 supports extended movie information (meaning you can enter title, author, copyright info and movie description and it will be shown in WMP) and the variable filesize splitting has been removed since it was buggy. SubRip 1.10 has an improved post OCR correction and contains a few bugfixes. Gspot 2.0 can determine what codecs your system will use to play a file, supports OGM files, can identify MPEG, QuickTime, RealMedia, WindowsMedia and Flash files, supports VFW, ACM, DS and DMO codecs and last but not least there are some UI improvements. And for all the Flask users out there there's a new official build: FlaskMpeg 0.7.6 RC1 which now works in YUV colorspace. has an on-the-fly setup, improved configuration and it can read VCD and SVCDs natively now.
10/24 DVDWriters.co.uk has the web's first review of the Pioneer A05 DVD burner. In a nutshell DVD writing is good but when it comes to DVD ripping or CD burning improvements can still be made.
10/22 As you can see there's not much going on in the ripping world right now. The only thing that could be interesting is that NEC has announced a 2nd new DVD burner which will burn both DVD-R and DVD+R at 4x speed, and the RW formats at their respective maximum (2x for -RW, 2.4x for +RW).
10/19 ScenChap 1.27 fixes a bug in the drop field time computations.
10/18 SubRip 1.081 can read TMPlayer, Mpl, Mpl2 and DKs files and contains some minor enhancements and bugfixes.

Considering that Derrow's site is getting hammered right now and the fact that the new IfoEdit is something really special I decided to do the daily update a bit earlier...

IfoEdit 0.94 has one major new feature: It can Author DVDs. Specifically it can multiplex DVD compliant MPEG-2 video streams and audio streams (AC3, MPA, WAV/LPCM). Currently there's no chapter functionality and subs are not possible either (that will come in a future release) but considering that until this day no free program could create a valid set of VOB/IFO/BUP files from elementary streams this release marks the beginning of a new era. Other than DVD authoring we have an option to automatically copy Menu files to the destination directory, PGC commands can be added/deleted/inserted in VTSM_PGCI_UT, the problems with VOBs containing more than 99 cells have been fixed, there's a menu item to copy and paste subtitle colors from PGC to PGC and the remux function has been slightly changed and should now work like IfoEdit 0.6.

On a different subject Ookami's freeware list has found a new home.

10/15 In case you haven't noticed it yet XviD is back. While the Sigma issue remains unresolved they are now considering an alternative course of action. There are plans to release a 1.0 version at the end of this year featuring dynamic/adaptive B-frames, a new motion estimation engine, improved adaptive quantization and Qpel refinement.
10/14 Link2 0.951 contains bugfixes for RAW audio, various Premiere related compatibility improvements and it should be faster as well.
10/13 OggMux 0.9.3 allows you to mux AC3 files into OGM containers. The only catch is that you have to make an AC3-WAV file first, but BeSweet can help you with that. More info about this can be found in the forum. IfoUpdate 0.55 has an option which identifies dummy PGCs and automates their handling, allowing you to reconstruct a DVD without having to worry about those dummy PGCs as IfoUpdate will automatically re-create after reauthoring. The ini support has also been enhanced. Pioneer has released the v1.33 firmware for the A04/104 DVD burner which re-enables 2x burning on CMC and Ritek media. And Gradius did not only make that firmware RPC-1 but also managed to remove the speed lock for all types of media, allowing you to burn any kind of DVD-R at 2x speed. Of course, if your media is not able to sustain the additional strain then all you'll get will be coasters.
10/12 ChopperXP 2.1 is a fast VOB cutting program.
10/10 Decomb 4.0 is a major upgrade featuring several useful new features like manual override of decisions and user-specifiable defaults. AVIMux_GUI 1.10 supports drag&drop, can read WAV files and contains a couple of bugfixes.
10/9 ScenChap 1.26 can handle tracks with no cells correctly and fixes a couple of bugs.
10/8 The Ogg DS Filters v0.9.9.5 supports vorbisgain tags, the splitter can pass tags like TITLE to the player and the tray icon now shows the title instead of Ogg DSF. The Ogg subtitle mixer v1.4.0.0 should no longer cause any GPFs used together with the DivX3 decoder filter. The Premiere Video Server v0.951 can create ECL files for CCE, supports both AviSynth 1.x and 2.x along with toolame, long filenames for pulldown.exe, color space conversion while frameserving and some compatibility improvements. The Avisynth Package v2.0 contains Avisynth 2.06, Link2 v0.951 and AvisynthEx v1.1.
10/7 There's a new release of the MPEG4IP binaries and the player. v0.9.6 contains mostly bugfixes and mpg to mp4 conversion. More info on this build can be found in the forum. IfoUpdate 0.54 fixes an error that would occur when you have a PGC that has no chapters and cells associated. VobEdit 0.52 allows demuxing of all types of DVD audio tracks, all button values are now editable and streams have some icon for easier identification.
10/6 Cinemacraft has released a new build of the 2.66 series. It now has a framerate setting and it fixes bugs in WAV parsing, setting reference frame and timecode and it sets Inverse 3:2 pulldown and pan&scan settings in the template. Even the new version still has some known bugs: VBR encoding and 3:2 pulldown detection don't work together and MPEG-1 encoding may cause a bad MV detected error. More info about the new release can be found in the forum.
10/5 Consumer friendly laws seem to be the new hit on the block as US congressman Rick Boucher introduces the Digital Media Consumer Rights Act or DMCRA for short. The DMCRA is very similar to Zoe Lofgren's DCFA and tries to restore balance in copyright law - reaffirm fair use, reestablish Betamax and restore scientific research - and ensures proper labeling of copy protected CDs.
10/4 BeSliced 0.2 can now also fix corrupt AC3 streams. DivXManager 1.0 can collect movie information from more than 20 different websites and offers an easy way to publish your movie collection on the web.
10/3 Congresswoman Zoe Lofgren's Digital Choice and Freedom Act of 2002 is probably the first proposed law concerning copyright law in the last few years that makes any sense. It would basically allow you to make legal copies of copyrighted works for fair use purposes, regardless of what format the work has been released in and whether it's protected by anti-copy measures or not, thus restoring balance between copyright holders and customers. Needless to say the movie and music industry is violently objecting to this act which is not surprising considering that they are sponsoring laws that make any copying illegal.
10/2 No new software or ripping news today, all I can offer you are two interesting pieces of PC hardware: Both AMD Athlon XP 2800+ featuring a 333MHz FSB and the Nvidia NForce2 chipset have been officially launched. Test results can be found @ Anandtech and many other places.
